Hello Hawai’i—a Big Island Beginning

We moved to Hilo, Hawaii from Denver, Colorado on May 31, 2019. Through this blog we hope to share the journey a little, as it’s been incredible for us to experience. We lived on the east side of Hawai’i island in an old plantation style home on one acre located about thirty minutes from Hilo down a gravel road deep in the Hawaiian rainforest.

These photos are at Onekahakaha Beach Park, one of the only places to swim on the Hilo side; all of the nice, sandy beaches are on the west side near Kona. The Hilo side has a rocky coastline with little to no beaches. The few beaches that do exist are made of rough black sand and are usually small to tiny. The Big Island is geologically young, especially along the Mauna Loa side, so there hasn’t been enough time for white or brown sand beaches to form. The black sand beaches are uniquely beautiful, it can feel like sitting on a beach on another planet.

Sometimes nature brings the unwanted visitor.

Blue-legged centipede. Caught this one on the third night in the living room. It came up on the sofa and was heading towards my thigh. Got him with the Dyson vacuum. Thanks Dyson!

In addition to the hair-raising centipedes, are the lovely geckos.

All of the fun brought happy faces to Saejun and Jihan.

Enormous plants and trees surrounded the house we lived in.

The only ocean access near our house was Maku’u point, a lava rock cove covered with tide pools and hammered by powerful surf that explodes when it hits the jumbled rock bench that divides sea from land. It’s one of those places where you can stand on the edge of the island, look out at the ocean and feel like you’re on a boat floating in the middle of the sea.
